Hypo Venture Capital Headlines: Patent wars plague Internet Age

http://the-looser-it-s-me.net/story/hypo-venture-capital-headlines-patent-wars-plague-internet-age-2

SAN FRANCISCO—The Internet Age is becoming as known for patent litigation as it is for online innovation.

From the makers of computer chips to creators of smartphones and designers of videogames, rivalries have spread from marketplaces to courtrooms with combatants warring over rights to use technology.

“For many years, there was basically a stalemate in the patents arms race with an understanding that companies wouldn’t sue each other,” said Colleen Chien, a law professor at Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley.

“That was disrupted by a new business model of patent assertion,” she continued. “It has become acceptable to violate the gentlemen’s agreement of not suing and now it is the new norm.”

The break in the unofficial truce was inspired in part by “patent trolls,” entities that buy or file patents with the sole intent of someday suing entrepreneurs who use the ideas.

Ranks of patent trolls are growing, as is the number of large companies turning to patent litigation not just to cash-in but to gain or protect market terrain, according to Chien.

“What do you call an AOL or a dying company that turns to patent lawsuits?” she asked rhetorically. “Do they become corporate trolls?”

Market and Economy News Update

U.S. markets drop over one percent: Markets accelerated their selloff in the final hour of trading on Friday and recorded their worst weekly decline for the year, as a slowdown in Chinese growth overshadowed a slew of better-than-expected earnings results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEXDJX:.DJI), the S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) and the NASDAQ (INDEXNASDAQ:.IXIC) all closed deep in the red.

U.S. consumer prices rise in March: US consumer prices rose 0.3 per cent in March, in line with economists’ expectations, as falling electricity costs countered higher gasoline prices. The core consumer price index, which excludes more volatile food and energy costs, rose 0.2 percent after gaining 0.1 percent in February, Labor Department data showed today in Washington.

Consumer sentiment falls in April: The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index in early April dropped to 75.7 from 76.2 last month, as consumers felt more cautious about the current state of the economy. Economists were expecting the preliminary April reading to remain at 76.2.

Hypo Venture Capital Headlines:Euro Weakens Versus Dollar on Sovereign-Debt Concern; Kiwi Touches Re - Saeo.net

Hypo Venture Capital Headlines:Euro Weakens Versus Dollar on Sovereign-Debt Concern; Kiwi Touches Re - Saeo.net

The euro fell for the first time in three days against the dollar on concern the currency region will struggle to contain its sovereign-debt crisis.

The currency slid versus most of its major counterparts after Greece’s Prime Minister George Papandreou said last week in Athens that he will press ahead with additional austerity measures after failing to win backing from opposition parties. New Zealand’s dollar dropped after surging today to its highest level since exchange-rate controls ended in 1985 as the nation’s trade surplus widened to a record in April.

“Until we get resolution, some clarity on what’s going on, the market is not going to have the confidence to take the euro higher,” said David Watt, senior currency strategist at Royal Bank of Canada’s RBC Capital Markets unit in Toronto.
